I’m new to this, so I guess I’m doing something wrong.
I want to simply map “Note On” messages from channel 14 to channel 4. Easy, right? Just like in one of the first YouTube tutorials. Using the pp and qq for note and velocity, etc.
I see the MIDI IN messages in the log, but no MIDI OUT message is ever produced. Also, no sound comes out of the output device of course. What am I missing? The “active” box is ticked of course, as are the “outgoing” and “MIDI OUT” boxes.
1: MIDI IN [U2MIDI Pro]: 9D 2D 40
2: MIDI IN [U2MIDI Pro]: 8D 2D 40
yes, of course. I use a CME U2MIDI Pro connector to insert my PC between two MIDI devices as a translator. The U2MIDI input is set as MIDI IN, and its output is set as MIDI OUT. These are the only two MIDI ports available to Bome Translator, just one IN, one OUT. No virtual ports, MIDI Yokes or whatever. The input works, because I get the messages in. However, no MIDI OUT messages ever appear anywhere.
OK, I cant see the full incoming message you are triggering on. Do you have the incoming to trigger on velocity 64 (0x40)?
Usually if you check MIDI In and also incoming and you see MIDI IN but not incoming (which is what I see in your log window), it means that you have the trigger on the translator set on incorrectly. Also make sure that you don’t have the translator looking for a different incoming port. By default the project defined ports can be used but if you change that definition at the preset level, it will override the project default. If you change the definition at the translator level, it will override both the preset and the project default.

I tried the Note Off message to see if that made any difference. Nope.
I reinstalled the software from scratch, to see if something had been corrupted. Nope.
I used a virtual output port instead of U2MIDI. Same problem. MIDI IN shows up, but no MIDI OUT.
I deleted everything I had done before and redefined the translator from scratch, exactly following the steps from the tutorial. Still no MIDI OUT messages anywhere.
I tried using default project ports vs. override. None of it makes any difference.
I tried velocity 0x40 instead of “all velocity - qq”. No difference of course.
As I am running out of ideas, I’m now looking for other software. This is taking too much time.
Could it be a windows problem? I’m running Windows 11 Pro. I tried to “run as administrator” and tried to run in compatibility mode for older Windows versions, but it won’t let me do that: Windows doesn’t actually see the Bome MIDI translator as a proper program, it is not in the Windows registry. Perhaps Windows thinks this is a virus, and somehow blocks port traffic? Just guessing.
You may try this. Just set you output port to the port that you want. I set it to Bome MIDI Translator Virtual Port 1. I also added a translator for note-off messages.
Thank you very much for your trouble. Guess what? Your file worked the first time. Of course, I wanted to know what I had been doing wrong before, so I carefully compared your settings with mine. Unfortunately, they were really the same, other than the “swallow” tickbox (…but that doesn’t make any difference here).
Just when I thought I was going crazy, I noticed that the little “preset” tickbox was never selected in my version (see earlier screenshots). This is the trouble with newbies: we don’t know what basic concepts like “preset” mean, the tutorial didn’t mention it (or I missed it) so I thought it wouldn’t be necessary for just translating a few MIDI codes.
I now understand that presets are used for grouping translations together that you may want to switch off as a group, while keeping other groups active. Good to know. I doubt I will ever need more than one preset, but for controlling ten or twelve different devices over one MIDI cable it will have its value.
I’m glad you got it to work. When creatng a new preset, they are checked by default so at some point you must have unchecked it. Sorry I didn’t notice that on your screenshot.
