Connecting iPad to PC using an Ethernet adapter

I’m using Bome Network on both my iPad and my PC. Im also using an Ethernet adapter on the iPad for all midi. The other end of the Ethernet cable plugs into a powered hub.

I’m having a great deal of trouble getting the iPad to acknowledge that the Ethernet adapter is plugged in. I have tried several adapters but the iPad only seems to respond when it wants to. I cannot work out why the iPad does not consistently recognise the adapter.

In the interim, Ive been using my Bome Box as a wireless interface and I have been amazed at the speed and consistency of the connection. It always connects almost instantly. I only switched to Ethernet because of other wireless interfence when gigging near outside near shops.

So my question is - how well will the BBox work at a gig if I can’t get the Ethernet to work for whatever reason?

Hi,

WiFi connectivity depends largely on the WiFi network congestion of the venue you are at.

I thought that you had discovered that one of your ethernet adapters was faulty. Is this not the case. As we have discovered, it seems more reliable using ethernet when you set the IP address of both your iPad and computer to fixed IP on the same network so that APIPA mode doesn’t kick in and mess up DHCP.

APIPA mode doesn’t come into play with wireless.

“WiFi connectivity depends largely on the WiFi network congestion of the venue you are at.”

When I was at the gig late last year, I didnt have the Bome Box with me for wireless access. I used a home router instead. The way the BB is working right now, it is fast and solid, so I thought that it may be ok if I can’t solve the non - connection Ethernet issue.

“I thought that you had discovered that one of your ethernet adapters was faulty.”

Thats what I thought at the time, and I even got a refund from Apple no questions asked. But I’ve since found that all four adapters I have act the same and only connect whenever it suits. And I also found that fixed ip addresses seemed to be preventing connection, so went back to automatic.

“APIPA mode doesn’t kick in and mess up DHCP.”

Could that be what’s preventing the non - connection Ethernet? I just don’t understand these deep issues. Perhaps I will reset fixed ip addresses and see if Ethernet will connect again.

Can you suggest some steps to follow with the fixed ip to see if I can get that working again?

  1. Set your computer for a fixed IP address of 192.168.0.2 with netmask of 255.255.255.0
  2. Set iPad with fixed IP address of 192.168.0.3 with netmask of 255.255.255.0
  3. Make sure your iPad has the name you had set up for previously within Bome Network o that it recognizes the name you gave it on your Surface Pro and in Gig Performer.
  4. Don’t change you computer name

Then try to connect.

Another morning of mostly experimenting testing adapters and cables etc. I finally have a working Ethernet connection that is reliable so far.
After declaring that all my spare adapters would not connect, I decided to hook up two adapters as shown above with a short Ethernet cable. I connected one adapter to the iPad and the other to the thunderbolt port on the PC. I bypassed the powered Ethernet port in the powered hub and I’ve had good steady connections since.. I will keep testing for a day or two to make sure the connection is robust and continues to work.

Question. Why cant I use a thunderbolt cable through Bome NW instead of the adapters? It wont connect. Is there a reason?

You mean Thunderbolt on your Surface Pro? Maybe it doesn’t support it. There is a difference between USB C and Thunderbolt.
