MIDI clock and maximum number of devices on a USB hub - is this a bug or a feature?

This may be a known feature but I couldn’t find anything in the forum with my keyword searches so thought I’d report it…

My Bome box runs the latest firmware.

My setup is moderately complex and all the routing is currently handled directly in the Bomebox rather than using MIDI Translator projects. I have attached a diagram showing 2 variations in the setup. One uses 2 USB hubs, one of which has 10 devices attached to it. The second uses 3 USB hubs and the maximum number of devices on each hub is now 8.

In the first setup, two of the devices attached to the hub with 10 devices receive and send MIDI fine, except they do not receive MIDI clock. In the second setup, where these devices are plugged into a third USB hub, they receive all MIDI including clock.

So it looks like there is a limit of 8 USB devices per USB hub for MIDI clock (but not other types of MIDI messages as far as I have tested).

Is this a bug or a feature?

Hi, I’m not aware of anything on BomeBox that restricts just MIDI clock. Have you tried moving your devices to a different port on the hub (one that is receiving clock) to see if the problem moves with the port or stays with the device?

Yes I have swapped ports on the hub. It’s a 10 port powered hub. I noticed that the 2 devices that fail to receive clock are the last 2 when the devices are listed alphabetically based on the name they show on the Bome box.

I’ve worked around the issue by using DIN ports for their clock but it had me stumped for a while and I was wondering if others had observed the behavior.

What version of BomeBox firmware are you running?
Also, try making your 10 port hub your first instead of your second and see if the problem follows the hub.

Firmware is 1.6.1. I can’t swap the hubs (logistics and cable sizes) but I tried different hubs and number of devices plugged in them. With a third hub everything syncs as I mentioned in my initial post. But I also found that if I unplug everything from the 10 port hub then plug them back one by one with the Prophet and the Osmose first, everything syncs as well (all 10 devices). It still syncs after I restart the Bome box. But if I turn the devices (synths) off and on again then the Prophet and the Osmose again stop syncing. I have only one 10 ports hub so I can’t check if it’s an issue with the hub.

The BomeBox supports up to 30 USB devices with any number of hubs.

It’s important to know that internally, USB only allows for 4-port hubs. A 10-port hub is really 3x 4-port hubs plugged into each other.

Can you send us two logs:

  1. the BomeBox web config log (copy/paste)
  2. the BomeBox advanced web config (link at bottom of web config), menu Status → Kernel Log.

Thanks!

PS: In general, we have seen these kind of problems with USB:

  • power: when using more than 2 USB devices, all involved USB hubs should be powered.
Note: you can power the BomeBox via a port of a powered USB hub, saving a dedicated BomeBox power supply.
  • cables: we have seen and thrown away a lot of bad USB cables.
  • the BomeBox USB host is USB 2.0, but we’ve tested it to work well with USB 3.0 hubs. Nevertheless, you depend on the manufacturer of the hub to correctly implement the USB 2.0 layer.
  • there exist very few USB hub models that don’t work with the BomeBox. We have not been able to find out why. Out of hundreds that we tested, one did not work (a very cheap 4-port model).

Here’s the log as I turned on the system today. The prophet 6 was not plugged through USB at the time and I plugged it into the 10 port hub. The Osmose was plugged in the 10 port hub already. Both the Osmose and the P6 do not sync to MIDI clock in that configuration:

After trying many more things including swapping hubs, trying different hubs etc, I noticed that the Prophet 6 lost sync sometimes when I plugged the Kronos into the hub. Which reminded me that there has been some reports of issues with the Kronos USB port as it is used for audio in addition to MIDI and possibly other issues. So I took the Kronos out of the hub and instead plugged it into the host port of the iConnectMIDI 4+, making sure that it only received and did not send USB MIDI. That seems to have fixed the problem (fingers crossed). So it may be that the Kronos sends a lot of USB garbage on its device port which overwhelms many hubs to the point where they can’t cope with an ongoing signal like MIDI clock…

Let’s see…

That’s very interesting, and good to hear! Crossing my fingers that this was the cause.

Thanks for the update!

Your follow-up points to a topology or USB-load edge case rather than a simple eight-device rule. The cleanest confirmation is to leave the Kronos on the iConnect host, then add devices back one at a time while watching whether clock drops only when the Kronos USB is enumerated; compare the same hub and ports with a different device. If the clock stays solid with the Kronos isolated, keeping its USB connection on the host (or using DIN for clock) is a sensible workaround while the other MIDI paths remain on the BomeBox.

For anyone debugging similar timing issues, a short frequency reference can also help when checking periodic drift: KYMA frequency reference

Well after extensive testing of multiple configurations I can reasonably confidently say that the main problem was the Kronos USB port being a d**k and overwhelming whatever was connected to it. The Bomebox was not the only victim - the iConnectMIDI4+ also behaved erratically until I gave up and connected the Kronos through its DIN ports instead of USB. The other difficult machine in my setup is the Osmose (see my other recent post) after its latest firmware update, which I’ve also fixed by connecting it through the DIN ports, which allows me to plug the USB port directly into the MacBook to make use of the wonderful new DAW control features which I don’t think the Bomebox would be able to handle as they are not MIDI as such.

Yes, as I said on your other post, I’m glad you got it working!
