Novation Launchpad Pro MIDI remap for combined finger drumming and bass synth

AB LP Left Bass Right Drums 003 Individual Midi - Ch16 In.bmtp (122.8 KB)

Hi there

The attached project splits a Novation Launchpad Pro (not MK3), in Drum Mode, into 2 parts. Left side for bass and right side for finger drumming. I’m slowly learning how to play both sides for live electronic music gigs. I use it to control Ableton Live and it’s loaded into a BomeBox to give me control over hardware synths and drum machines.

This is my first Translator project so be gentle. It’s also the main reason I bought MIDI Translator Pro and a BomeBox.

The project transforms MIDI notes from the Lauchpad Pro Drum Mode on MIDI Ch.16, and splits them initially, into 2 MIDI channels. The drum MIDI note layout is loosely based on Ableton Live’s suggestions, so I can load in Live’s presets and not have to tweak too much.

I use a mirror-method set up for my finger drumming. Link here. It’s criticised for being a bit lazy but it works for me.

Link to graphical view of layout here.

Left hand bass
The left side 4 x 8 side retransmits on MIDI Ch.1 and is a chromatic scale E1 to B3.
Transposition and MIDI channel can be changed by pressing one of the green buttons (see graphical view).

Right hand drums
Every pad on the right hand side retransmits on MIDI Ch.16, its MIDI note and MIDI channel can be changed. This is done by holding the one of the red coloured buttons down, and then hitting the drum pad. It wasn’t intended, but you can hold multiple drum pads down and change their pitch and channel at the same time. The cyan coloured buttons are used to trigger presets or to reset all drum pads to MIDI Ch.16.

I’m sharing as it’s super handy and very tweak-able, even if you don’t have a Launchpad it could be used to remap any MIDI device. I’d also like feedback and, if anyone has the time, find out if there is a way to slimline my bodged project.

I don’t think it’s possible yet, but I would like to be able to store a custom set up on the fly e.g. press one of the spare MIDI CC buttons to save a snapshot.

Hope that all makes sense.

Andrew
