Switching From PC to Mac

Hi,

Will BMTP projects created on BMTP for Windows open in BMTP for Mac OS? When setting up BMTP on Mac, is there any thing that I should know regarding differences from Windows behaviour?.
Also, I use thousands of Mouse position and click Translators in my main project. I will be using the same 32" 1080p monitor. Will these Translators work alright in BMTP for Mac?

Hi,

For the most part you will not need to do anything.

However you might need to check ‘Swap Command Key for Control’ for keyboard outgoing actions. See the Bome MIDI Translator Pro manual page 48.

Command line to start MTP will be different since it is a different operating system.

The settings file is in a different place on Mac the Windows.

Outgoing focus actions may needs some tweaking as there may be different apps and invocations on each OS.

If you have the same resolution on the displays, it should work.

You will have the ability to use AppleScript outgoing actions on the Mac but not the PC.

You will be able to use injected keystrokes or mouse actions on the PC but not the Mac.

Of course you MIDI ports may be different on each computer, so you may need to re-assign aliases. If you are not using aliases and the physical device names are different on each computer you may need to assign different input and output ports on each system which is why I recommend the use of aliases for portability.

That is all I can think of at the moment.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. So the same file will open on a Mac? I am not using aliases. The ports I am using are:

Roland Piano
Metagrid In
Metagrid Out
Bome In
Bome Out
^ These are setup in Loop MIDI

Bome MIDI Translator Virtual In 1-9
Bome MIDI Translator Virtual Out 1-9

So will the reassignment of ports just be on the Mac end, or in the project itself? Because that would be a monumental task.
Also, I have tried changing things en masse in BMTP within Note Pad. But I find that Translator names are so long that the “Search” and “Replace” fields in Note Pad do not accommodate such long names.

If you hard coded the device names instead of using aliases you would have to go to wherever you defined the port names and re-define them if the Mac operation system has different names than the Windows operating system. If it exposes the exact same port name then you will be OK. It is also possible the Bome MIDI Translator Pro, will not see the device ports and think they are aliases and prompt you to assign them to whatever the Mac physical port names are.

This is the main reason I recommend the use of aliases.

You can learn more about aliases from this tutorial.

For more information about device selection, see this tutorial.

Okay. Do you know whether Mac OS sees BMTP ports named e.g. “Bome MIDI Translator Virtual Out 1” like windows does? Because if it does, this means my project should work okay on Mac OS.

yes it does
