Virtual port vs virtual out

Hey there!
What’s the real difference between Virtual Ports and Virtual outs? It seems that in the explanation of backwards-compatibility, Virtual Ports are the older nomenclature and are still in existence so that older projects don’t need extensive reconfiguration, but really are not that different if at all for new users today? Is that correct?

Virtual In and Virtual Out were the old nomenclature.

Later we had a new name and we didn’t want to break backward compatibility so we left the old names there and then created aliases ‘Virtual Ports’ the simply point to the original name. You can use either but don’t use both our you will be sending or receiving double MIDI messages.

Personally, I like to set up my own aliases for these that have meaning to me. So if using a virtual port I just point my aliases up to the Virtual Ins and Virtual Outs. I typically call them things like ‘My Controller’ and ‘Application’ as an example.

You can learn more about aliases from this tutorial.
