Trying to get Pro Tools and Bome Network to work in harmony

Steve,

I could use your help please. Occasionally, I like to use Pro Tools 2026, but I don’t need Bome for those sessions. I use Bome when I use Cubase. Presently, when I launch a Pro Tools session it crashes on exit every time. When I removed Bome from my computer, Pro Tools would operate normally and Exit gracefully. I think that Bome is grabbing the midi ports before Pro Tools can, and Pro Tools can’t deal with that.

Is there a way to quickly remove or disable all of the Bome virtual ports so that they don’t show up in Windows Device Manager without removing Bome from my Windows 11 PC and re-enable them quickly when I want to use Cubase?

Hi Jack,

If you have the latest Windows 11 update, then you should be able to use the MIDI ports from multiple applications. Are you using loopMIDI or loopBE for virtual ports. If so, there are some issues with these application on Windows 11. Maybe they are fixed by now, but I’m not sure. Search the Microsoft web site for “MIDI 2.0” and you should be able to find the latest status.

Bome Network’s addon “Unlimited Named MIDI Ports” works, however.

Thanks for the reply, Steve. For midi networking I am using just Bome Network and Unlimited Named midi Ports. I certainly wouldn’t mind if those ports stayed active when using Pro Tools if Pro Tools didn’t have any problems with them. I haven’t checked my Windows 11 version in the last five days or so, but it was up to date then. I’ll check again today.
I have about seven DAWs on my computer, but Pro Tools 2026 is the only one that exhibits problems with Bome Network. I wish that Pro Tools was a bit more flexible and accommodating.
Maybe a future Pro Tools build will resolve the issue even if it does so unintentionally.

You might want to look at this post that might help with your issue.
It is not the same problem, but if Pro-Tools is confused, maybe this will help reset the MIDI ports which could possibly clear things up.

I’ll try that suggestion mentioned in the post you provided, but I’m actually just trying to trigger an instrument assigned to a standard midi port in a Pro Tools instrument track by pressing keys on my midi controller keyboard. Apparently, I can do that if I disable some Bome ports first, but Pro Tools still crashes on Exit regardless if Bome Network is installed. Thanks again for your help, Steve.

Maybe there is some sort of name collision. What is the name of your hardware port from the controller and then the name of the Bome Virtual port?

Also, make sure you are running the latest version of Bome Network.

Finally when Pro-tools crashes, perhaps you can send a crashdump.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the tips. I am running the latest version of Bome Network though. I worked with Avid for two weeks trying to resolve the issue. They even went remote-in on my computer, but I was the one that later discovered the conflict with Bome Network and got Pro Tools running without crashing.
I have since decided to move Pro Tools to a separate computer, because I don’t want to give up using Bome Network, nor do I want to have to work around Pro Tools.
Thanks again for your help though. Considering that Bome Network doesn’t interfere with any of my other DAWs, hopefully Avid will do something to make the Pro Tools MIDI engine more flexible.
